Flint Hills Resources Honored
Flint Hills Resources, JA of the Coastal Bend's top
corporate supporter, was one of eleven Texas businesses to recently
receive the Employers for Education Excellence Award.
Designed to promote more community involvement in the
public schools, the Employers for Education Excellence Award
recognizes employers who implement policies that encourage employee
involvement in school activities.
"This is well-deserved recognition for these
companies and businesses that encourage their staff members to attend
parent-teacher conferences, mentor students, assist with special
projects, and volunteer in many other ways in our public
schools," said Gail Lowe, chair of the State Board of Education.
"The entire board joins me in commending these employers for their
visible commitment to public education."
Flint Hills Resources was honored because of their
employee involvement in teaching JA programs to students in the
Tuloso-Midway Independent School District and also spending time with
students in that district.

Fall
Participation Results
As a part of JA of South Texas' continuing effort to
ensure program quality, classroom volunteers and educators are
encouraged to provide feedback. The results to-date of the fall
2009 educator and volunteer surveys have been encouraging. 96% of
educators indicated the JA program is an overall positive
experience for their students. And 99% of volunteers responded the
experience was positive (80% excellent - 19% good).
Educator Feedback:
My students were actively engaged and looked forward
to each lesson. The pacing and real life connections allowed for
great discussions, interactions, and student involvement. JA
created a platform for future decision making.
The Junior Achievement program is an excellent
addition to our first grade social studies program. It is such a
good compliment as it touches on many of the topics our TEKS
require us to teach. The children love to hear another person's
voice and point of view. An excellent program! Thank you for
providing it for our young people!
Volunteer Feedback:
I volunteer throughout the community all year long.
I can honestly say this was an experience I will never forget. I
value the lessons that were learned and positive impact/role we had
on the children.
I was so happy every time I went to my class. When
the class was doing their assignments, they were actually learning
what I had taught them! It felt great!
Thanks to all JA's classroom volunteers and
professional educators who partner to make JA happen in area
schools.

JA's Spring Bowl-A-Thon
is Ready to Hit the High Seas!
Every
year, businesses get together to raise funds through JA's annual
Bowl-A-Thon. During the 2009-2010 school year, this event will help
JA raise approximately $424,000 to assist in providing economic
education programming to over 70,000 students in San Antonio and
south Texas! Companies find that participating in this event has
tremendous benefits:
- Great
organizational team-builder
- Significant
community impact with little or no cost to the company
- A
fun filled one-day experience consisting of 2 games of
bowling, shoe rental, goodies, and a JA Bowl-A-Thon T-shirt
JA will host a kick-off luncheon to
prepare coordinators with everything they need for a
successful event.
If you are interested in learning more about the JA
Bowl-A-Thon or would like to attend the Spring Kick-Off Luncheon on
January 13th or 14th please contact Veronica
Avila at 210.490.2007 ext. 119.
