Najim Foundation Continues Support of Title I Initiative
JA would like to convey its sincere thanks to the Harvey
E. Najim Family Foundation for their commitment to the JA mission.
The foundation continued their financial support of the JA Title I Initiative
for the 2009/2010 school year. The Title
I Initiative, a key part of the JA of South Texas
strategic plan developed by its board of directors, calls for
increasing participation among schools at which the majority of
students are economically disadvantaged. In the past three years, the
growth among Title I schools has increased from 224 to 322. This
could not have been accomplished without the commitment of the Harvey
E. Najim Family Foundation.

In 2008, AT&T announced a grant to JA Worldwide
to support the JA Job Shadow initiative that will reach 100,000
high school students in the United States over a five year
period. AT&T employees are providing students in grades 9 - 12
the opportunity to experience the world of work firsthand, matching
employee volunteers with high school students to showcase the
careers and job skills that a successful education makes possible.
Locally, Job Shadow Days operated this fall with 380 students
participating from the following schools:
- Brackenridge
HS
- Business
Careers HS
- East
Central HS
- John
Jay HS
- Lanier
HS
Many thanks to the AT&T Job Shadow Day
coordinator - Javier Tamez, the AT&T volunteers, and
professional educators for their participation that enabled
students to experience a potential future.
AT&T volunteers and students from Business
Careers High School start their Job Shadow experience.

School Partnerships
Increase
Junior
Achievement of South Texas is excited about the increase in
the number of partnerships between businesses and schools in our
area. A school partnership entails having an organization provide
the requisite volunteers needed to implement the JA programs
requested by educators at a particular school. JA is grateful for
these relationships that allow volunteers to deliver programs
that impact the lives of our local students. We would like to thank
the following stakeholders that have worked together this past
month:
Capital Group and Esparza Elementary: JA board
member John Comander, company coordinator Cathy Rea, principal
Melva Matkin, school coordinator Ana Hernandez
NuStar Energy and Larkspur Elementary: JA board
member Bob Grimes, company coordinator Sarah McLaughlin, principal
Jerry Zapata, school coordinator Keli Hausman
Rackspace and Montgomery Elementary: company
coordinators Mari Aguirre and Samantha Swaim, principal Walter
Allen, school coordinator Terri Klein
Tesoro Corporation and Stahl Elementary: JA board
member Phil Anderson, company coordinators Nina Owens and Carrie
Bulsiewicz, principal Pita Canales, school coordinator Donna Fisher
Valero Energy and Oak Meadow Elementary: JA board
member Jeremy Bergeron, company coordinator Todd Glawson, principal
Judy Wells, school coordinator Cindy Himstedt
A sincere thank you to all the educators and
volunteers that have worked together to help impact almost 1,600
students in over 80 classrooms!
