We are proud
to report our year-end results for 2008-2009 as we reached a total
of 69,126 students in south Texas; 47,849 of whom are
considered economically disadvantaged. This represents
another year of growth in overall students, as well as a greater number
of students reached in Title I schools. Coupled with a
very modest financial surplus, this proved to be a tremendous
year.
Even in the midst of challenging economic times, we are more
committed than ever to providing critical programs to help
inspire and prepare young people for success. Thank you to all
the financial partners, educators, and volunteers that joined
us this year, and we look forward to continued growth for
2009-2010!

Our
Nation
Program Revised: STEM Focus
JA's Our Nation
program provides practical knowledge about business' need for
skilled workers in today's high-growth and high-demand jobs.
Focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics), students learn about advertising, resources,
globalization of business, and even write their own resume. We are
always looking for volunteers that are passionate about their job
and want to share it with a classroom!

Financial
Planning Program Evaluation Results
Junior
Achievement continually strives to ensure our program impact, and
over the past five years, JA Worldwide has spent $3.1 million to
fund independent evaluations. These are implemented in
representative markets throughout the U.S., and JA of South Texas
was selected to participate in a recent evaluation of our Personal
Financial Literacy Program. Here are the results
from local students:
-
There was
a 38.8% increase upon completion of the program in students
who said they "Know Some" or "Know a Lot"
about the impact of credit card finance charges.
-
There
was a 48.9% increase in students who "Know Some" or
Know a Lot" about how to protect themselves from identity
theft.
-
There
was a 48.9% increase in students who know the difference
between long-term and short-term investments, and a 55.2%
increase in students who know the difference between high
risk and low risk investments.
-
100%
of the students agreed or strongly agreed upon completion of
the program that understanding personal finance is important
to them, and that it is important to pay attention to their
credit card spending.
-
There
was a 20.4% increase in students who said that they set
personal financial goals for themselves.
