 Job Shadow Day

JA of South Texas, in collaboration with Communities In Schools, participated in the annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day on February 2nd. Over 150 students had the opportunity to learn first-hand the ways in which the work they do in school relates to their future. Among them were John Jay High School students, Darren Conway and Autumn McAfee. Darren, a post-Katrina transplant from New Orleans, and Autumn, who hopes one day to become an FBI agent, had the opportunity to shadow San Antonio Police Chief William McManus. Chief McManus, who strongly believes in the value of supporting the youth of our community, volunteered his time to provide insights into a range of careers at the police department. Darren and Autumn toured police headquarters and met with the Chief and several other members of the SAPD to learn about various aspects of the department’s work.

Sgt. Robert McCaskill (third from the left), provides an overview of the Communications Center at the San Antonio Police Department.

An additional 500 students will benefit from this opportunity in the spring of 2007. Participating organizations in San Antonio to-date include:
Alliance Data KSAT-12
Best Buy Stores Port San Antonio
Bexar County-Judge Nelson Wolff San Antonio City Council
Citigroup San Antonio Credit Union
Coca-Cola San Antonio Express News
Domino's Pizza San Antonio Police Department
Ernst & Young Security Service Federal Credit Union
Frost Bank Washington Mutual
H-E-B

Thanks to all the participating organizations that help students expand their sense of opportunity and hope.

 Teens and Entrepreneurship
 JA Interprise Poll Results

Acknowledging that hard work and determination, a college education, and hands-on experience are all important to succeed as an entrepreneur, teens find the idea of starting their own business very appealing. Of the 1,474 teens responding to a recent JA Interprise Poll on Entrepreneurship, 70.9% indicated that they would like to be self-employed at some point in their lives.

Teens think that hands-on experience is the best means to learn about a business that they wish to pursue. "Working in the same industry first" was selected by 49.5% of teens as the top resource for finding out how to start a business. The Internet was a distant second with 15.3%.

In reviewing a list of ingredients for business success, students selected "hard work and determination" as their top pick (33.4%). "Leadership and management skills" followed with 25.1%.

Junior Achievement is proud to provide programs that allow students to develop the understanding, skills, and experiences needed to reach for their dreams.
