Supporter Spotlight
Capital Group/American
Funds & Sul Ross Middle and Esparza
Elementary Schools
During the 1994-95
school year, Capital Group/American Funds formed
a committee to consider the adoption of a local
school. Having made a determination to stay with
one school for the long term, the committee
focused on finding a school that could best use
the resources Capital Group/American Funds could
provide. They selected Sul Ross Middle School,
which provided the opportunity for consistent
involvement. The partnership initially entailed
a mentoring program, intramural sports program,
and activities program. In 1998-99, Capital
Group began providing Junior Achievement
programs at Sul Ross Middle and one of its
feeder schools, Esparza Elementary.
At the
conclusion of its 10th year in partnership with
Sul Ross Middle School and Northside Independent
School District (NISD), the Adopt-A-School
Program was honored with the 2005 Governor’s
Volunteer Award for Corporate Citizenship. This
fall, associates from Capital Group/American
Funds again taught the JA programs at Esparza
Elementary, with Sul Ross scheduled to
participate in the spring of 2007.
Congratulations to all involved in making this
partnership a dynamic relationship that
continues to grow.
