Supporter Spotlight
Michael Reams, Valero
Energy Corporation
Michael Reames, our
overall top individual fund raiser from the fall
bowl-a-thon has enjoyed a long history with JA.
Michael first participated in Junior Achievement
as a high school student in 1974-75, in the
JA Company Program. In the company
program, students organize and operate an actual
business enterprise, and not only learn how
businesses function, but they also learn about
the structure of the U.S. free enterprise system
and the benefits it provides. As a junior,
Michael served as Vice President of his JA
company and traveled to Bloomington Indiana to
compete at NAJAC, a national competition among
JA companies throughout the US. There he was
named Vice President of the year.
JA has
made a lasting impact on Michael. “My parents
were divorced when I was 6. My mom looked for
mentoring opportunities for me and I really
enjoyed being a part of JA,” said Reames. “In my
yearbook, after listing my athletic
participation, it read ‘the JA kid.’” Reames
continued, “My mom died recently and right
before she passed, I told her I wanted to get
involved in the community. She was barely able
to speak but had two words for me: Junior
Achievement.” So Michael volunteered in
the classroom last year and participates in the
annual JA bowl-a-thon representing Valero. “I’m
glad I can do my part to give
back.”
Michael, so are we!
