JA of South Texas Students Place Third in North American Competition

Sean Hewitt, Karisa Lancaster, and Anatha Latshaw made the trip to New York from O'Connor High School and finished in third place in the inaugural "JA Banks in Action" North American Tournament. The competition was held in New York on July 16-17 by Citi Foundation and JA Worldwide at the Marriott East Side Hotel. Team "EMO Bank" vied against regional semi-finalists from Delaware, Florida, Missouri, Illinois, Nevada, Texas, and Canada for the North American title.

Banks In Action

Geared to high school students, "JA Banks in Action" exposes students to banking basics, operations, and history, and students learn about various career paths they can take in the financial services industry. A computer simulation allows student competitors to role-play in high-level positions such as CEO and CFO, challenging them to successfully operate a bank in a dynamic environment where their decisions will make or break 'their' bank. The students face off in an exhilarating game of financial know-how and skill, where good money management instincts are the key to survival.

Congratulations to their teacher, Pamela Hummel, their JA volunteer Lacreeda Guerrero of Citi, and to Sean, Karisa, and Anatha!

JA Fall Bowl-A-Thon Set to Kick Off
Bowlathon

Every year, businesses get together to raise funds through JA's annual Bowl-A-Thon. During the 2007-2008 school year, this team-building event will help JA raise approximately $360,000 to provide economic education programming to 62,000 students! Companies find that participating in this event has tremendous benefits:
  • Great organizational team-builder
  • Significant community impact with little or no cost to company
  • Participants experience a fun-filled, one day event, consisting of 2 games of bowling, shoe rental, goodies, and Bowl-A-Thon t-shirt

JA will host a kick-off luncheon to prepare coordinators with everything they need for a successful event, including an introduction to JA's online registration and pledge solicitation system.

If you are interested in learning more about the JA Bowl-A-Thon or would like to attend the Fall Kick-off Luncheon on August 29, 2007, please contact

South Texas

JA extends its sincere gratitude to the Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation, which recently granted $50,000 to help JA of South Texas add the capacity needed to expand our program reach to those schools with the greatest need.  This grant was one of many provided to local youth organizations as Mr. Najim and his family strive to ensure our children have the resources needed to pursue positive futures.
