AT&T Job Shadow Initiative
 AT&T has
announced a $5.5 million grant to JA Worldwide to
support the JA Job Shadow initiative that will reach
100,000 high school students in the United States over
the next five years. The purpose of the initiative
is to provide career exposure and insight into the
education requirements for AT&T jobs to high school
students with the goals of decreasing the drop out rates
and increasing the talent pipeline for the business
community.
A pilot JA Job Shadow experience was conducted on
March 18th. JA student Alex Elizardo from Lanier
High School spent the day with AT&T Chairman and
CEO, Randall Stephenson. After the experience,
Alex shared, "That day has broadened my horizons
tremendously. It has allowed me to make a
connection between my education and my potential
career." Dianne Warnock, Alex's JA teacher at Lanier
indicated, "Job shadowing gives our students a chance to
dream. These opportunities for our students will
definitely change some lives. And Alex is the
first."
We extend our sincere appreciation to Laura
Sanford, President of the AT&T Foundation for this
opportunity and look forward to participating in the
program in the fall of
2008. |
Junior Achievement
of South Texas is proud to bring the mobile capstone
program, JA Finance Park, sponsored by Capital One, to
San Antonio this May. This experiential financial
literacy program targets middle grade students and
combines classroom activities with a site visit to
Finance Park where students will be given a life
scenario (complete with an annual salary and family
situation) and work to develop a monthly budget based on
19 spending categories. After the site vist,
students engage in career exploration activities that
allow them to connect their current education with
future earning power.
If you would like more information about
JA Finance Park or would like to take a personal tour,
contact Bernadette Byrd at 210.490.2007 ext. 106. Tours
will last between 15 - 30 minutes and will allow you to
gain an overview of the program, see the students in
action, and interact with educators and students.
