Junior Achievement and
Capital One Launch Mobile Financial Literacy
Program in South Texas
Basic money management skills are crucial
building blocks to economic self-sufficiency and
research shows that many students are unable to
effectively manage their finances when they graduate
from high school. During May, Junior Achievement
of South Texas and Capital One Financial Corporation
will bring money management skills to approximately
1,000 middle-school students.
This dynamic program starts with four weeks of
in-classroom lessons developed by Junior Achievement;
students will then visit the Capital One/Junior
Achievement Mobile Finance Park. Their goal while
at JA Finance Park is to apply the lessons they've
learned in the classroom: developing and using a
personal budget for a month in the life of an
adult.
Upon arrival at JA Finance Park, each student is
assigned a "life situation." This includes a job,
a monthly income, family situation - and taxes!
Students then begin to work on their budget, making
decisions about housing, furnishings, investments, food,
entertainment, phone, cable, charitable contributions -
all of the decisions they will ultimately make upon
entering adulthood.
"This program drives home the importance of
developing good financial literacy skills at an early
age. Capital One and Junior Achievement share the
belief that the earlier students learn about money, the
more successful they will be in the long run," said Kent
Ivanoff, Executive Vice President of Capital
One. "We hope that this program can give kids an
experience that will last them a
lifetime." |

Leave a Legacy
Have you ever considered naming Junior
Achievement as a beneficiary in your will? A planned
gift is one of the greatest ways to ensure a strong and
prosperous future for Junior Achievement and the young people
we reach. For more information on planned giving
opportunities, click here.
In some cases JA learns of a planned gift
only after a long-time supporter passes away. If you
have made provision for JA in your will, we encourage you to
let us know so that we have the opportunity to thank you and
ensure your intentions are fully realized. Contact Joe
Burke, President, jburke@jast.org. |
